How do we get there? Plan B
From the South via Noosa and the Freshwater Road -
Plan B
If conditions are not right or safe at the Rainbow Beach 8 Mile
rocks, Plan B involves backtracking and taking the Freshwater Road.
- The Freshwater Road is mainly a sand track,
very similar to the roads on Fraser Island. It will require 4
wheel drive and will add about 40 to 60 minutes to your travel time.
- Nevertheless, it will take you past a very
grassy picnic area, the delightful Freshwater Lake, some spectacular
lookouts and through some very picturesque rainforest. Hardly a
penalty!
- Driving Instructions:
- - Proceed via Tewantin and the Cooloola
coloured sands as per Plan A on the
previous page.
- - The Freshwater Road starts on the eastern beach about 4km south
of the Cherry Venture wreck. The entrance is clearly
signposted "Freshwater Lake 1.5km".
- - The Freshwater Road brings you out onto the main road to Gympie
just a few km south of Rainbow Beach township.
- - Turn right onto the bitumen road and drive
carefully into Rainbow Beach. (Remember you have low pressure
in your tyres.)
- Just as you enter town, the National Parks
Ranger's office will be on your right. Call in here for your
Fraser Island vehicle permit, tide tables and the latest info on
Fraser Island beach and track conditions.
- Continue into town, pass the Shell service
station on your left (last chance for mainland fuel; not cheap, but
cheaper than on the island), pass the park on your left and turn
left at the sign to "Inskip Point".
- Continue as per Plan A on the
previous page.
